Since this is a Houston area real estate forum I'm assuming you're talking about real estate photography in the Houston area. One resource that has been very helpful to me is www.photographyforrealestate.net This site specifically caters to real estate photographers and agents who want to improve their own photography. Also, go to any local real estate brokers office in your area and ask if there are any agents who would like a free photo shoot. Get a couple of shoots under your belt, show your portfolio to other agents and get some jobs. Build a website with your portfolio. Good Luck!

If you're looking for portrait photography, the best way to start is to simply ask friends and family if you can take their pictures. Then, post them to your Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and any other social media you have. You have to let people know you're a photographer and let them see your work. Seek out workshops to attend to build your skills.
If you're wanting to get into landscapes, just go around the area taking pictures of landmarks and nature and, again, posting them to your social media. The object is to draw attention to your skills.
