Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Young Womens Leadership Academy, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, with Garcia Middle School, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Young Womens Leadership Academy’s regular student population is 187 with a 11.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Garcia Middle School is 1,151 students and a 15.9 students/teacher ratio.
Young Womens Leadership Academy performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 90 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 94 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Garcia Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 62 in student achievement, 81 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Young Womens Leadership Academy's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Garcia Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Young Womens Leadership Academy. They make up for 60.43% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.69%), Whites or Caucasians (1.60%), Native Americans (1.60%), Asians (1.07%) and Two or More Races (1.07%).
At Garcia Middle School, Hispanics make up 74.54% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.64%), Asians (2.87%), Whites or Caucasians (1.74%), Two or More Races (0.96%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
Based on household incomes, the Young Womens Leadership Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 83.42% compared to 90.53% at Garcia Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Young Womens Leadership Academy has 30 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 16.04% of student population. Garcia Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 458 or about 39.79% of student population.
Young Womens Leadership Academy’s bilingual students comprise 16.04%, gifted and talented students, 21.93%, while 0.53% are in the special education program. Garcia Middle School bilingual students comprise 39.27%, gifted and talented students, 5.21%, and 8.69% are in the special education program.
Young Womens Leadership Academy's 16 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 3.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.3 years. Teachers at Garcia Middle School, numbering 72 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Young Womens Leadership Academy no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while five teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Garcia Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 21 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Young Womens Leadership Academy there are 14 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, two teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
At Garcia Middle School there are 54 female teachers and 17 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and 13 more working as school support staff.
