Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Young Women's College Prep Academy, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with R D S P D, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Young Women's College Prep Academy has a regular student population of 427 with a 14.5 students/teacher ratio while R D S P D has 32 students and a student-teacher ratio of 2.9 students/teacher ratio.
Young Women's College Prep Academy earned a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 95 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 97 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, the performance indicators not applicable for R D S P D due to the on-going impact from the COVID-19 pandemic.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Young Women's College Prep Academy's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. R D S P D did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Young Women's College Prep Academy. They make up for 50.35% of student population, followed by Hispanics (42.62%), Whites or Caucasians (3.04%), Asians (1.64%), Two or More Races (1.64%) and Native Americans (0.47%).
The student population at R D S P D is also predominantly by Hispanics at 37.50%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.38%), African Americans (18.75%), Asians (3.13%), Native Americans (3.13%) and Two or More Races (3.13%).
Based on household incomes, Young Women's College Prep Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 69.79% compared to 21.88% at R D S P D.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Young Women's College Prep Academy has 28 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 6.56% of student population. R D S P D has no ELLS student population.
Young Women's College Prep Academy 1.87% are in the special education program, 34.89% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 7.96% students. R D S P D has no gifted and talented and bilingual students, while 6.25% are in the special education program.
29 teachers employed at Young Women's College Prep Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.6 years. The 11 teachers at R D S P D have been serving the school for an average of 12.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Young Women's College Prep Academy has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. R D S P D has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, three teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while one teacher only has been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Young Women's College Prep Academy there are 23 female teachers and six male teachers. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
At R D S P D there are ten female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, 11 teachers are in special education without any assistance.
