Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Young Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Horn Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Young Elementary School has a regular student population of 366 with a 16.6 students/teacher ratio while Horn Elementary School has 752 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.6 students/teacher ratio.
Young Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 59 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Horn Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 96 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 97 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Young Elementary School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science and with 25% student progress. Horn Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Young Elementary School is African Americans who make up nearly 81.97% of student population, followed by Hispanics (15.57%), Whites or Caucasians (1.91%) and Two or More Races (0.55%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
The student population at Horn Elementary School is also predominantly by Asians at 38.03%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.78%), Hispanics (17.69%), Two or More Races (6.91%), African Americans (5.45%) and Native Americans (0.13%).
Based on household incomes, Young Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 96.17% compared to 17.82% at Horn Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Young Elementary School has 10 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 2.73% of student population. Horn Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 140 or about 18.62% of student population.
In addition, Young Elementary School has 3.01% bilingual students, 1.09% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.47% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Horn Elementary School with 17.55% bilingual students, 38.03% gifted and talented students and 7.31% students in the special education program.
22 teachers employed at Young Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 4.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.4 years. The 42 teachers at Horn Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 10.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Young Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, one teacher only has worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Horn Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Young Elementary School there are 19 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
At Horn Elementary School there are 41 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, four teachers are aides or paraprofessionals.
