Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Yeager Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Moore Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Yeager Elementary School has a regular student population of 845 with a 15.3 students/teacher ratio while Moore Elementary School has 1,000 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.3 students/teacher ratio.
Yeager Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Moore Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 81 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Except for post-secondary, Yeager Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions. Moore Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Yeager Elementary School. They make up for 53.37% of student population, followed by African Americans (23.08%), Whites or Caucasians (16.57%), Asians (3.43%), Two or More Races (3.08%) and Native Americans (0.24%).
The student population at Moore Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 30.50%, followed by Hispanics (27.50%), African Americans (26.30%), Asians (10.90%), Two or More Races (4.50%) and Native Americans (0.20%).
Based on household incomes, Yeager Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 70.77% compared to 54.10% at Moore Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Yeager Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 28.05% of its student population compared to 10.20% at Moore Elementary School.
In addition, Yeager Elementary School has 27.69% bilingual students, 1.66% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.83% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Moore Elementary School with 9.70% bilingual students, 8.20% gifted and talented students and 10.20% students in the special education program.
55 teachers employed at Yeager Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.4 years. The 54 teachers at Moore Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Yeager Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Moore Elementary School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Yeager Elementary School there are 53 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 24 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and 11 more working as school support staff.
