Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Whispering Pines Elementary School, which is a part of HUMBLE ISD, with Timbers Elementary School, which is a part of HUMBLE ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Whispering Pines Elementary School has a regular student population of 618 with a 12.4 students/teacher ratio while Timbers Elementary School has 678 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.3 students/teacher ratio.
Whispering Pines Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 57 in student achievement, 75 in school progress and 64 in closing performance gaps. It scored 72 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Timbers Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 67 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 70 in closing performance gaps and 69 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Whispering Pines Elementary School and Timbers Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Whispering Pines Elementary School. They make up for 44.01% of student population, followed by African Americans (38.51%), Whites or Caucasians (9.71%), Two or More Races (3.72%) and Asians (3.24%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Timbers Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 42.18%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (25.52%), African Americans (25.22%), Asians (2.95%), Two or More Races (2.51%) and Native Americans (0.88%).
Based on household incomes, Whispering Pines Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 68.12% compared to 53.69% at Timbers Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Whispering Pines Elementary School has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 12.46% of its student population compared to 10.77% at Timbers Elementary School.
In addition, Whispering Pines Elementary School has 11.65% bilingual students, 2.75% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.68% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Timbers Elementary School with 10.32% bilingual students, 3.69% gifted and talented students and 14.31% students in the special education program.
50 teachers employed at Whispering Pines Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 4.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years. The 47 teachers at Timbers Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Whispering Pines Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 16 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Timbers Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 17 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Whispering Pines Elementary School there are 47 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
