As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Wheatley High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Kashmere High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Wheatley High School’s regular student population is 740 with a student-teacher ratio of 14.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Kashmere High School is 783 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.7 students/teacher ratio.
Wheatley High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 68 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 78 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Kashmere High School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 62 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 65 in closing performance gaps and 68 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Wheatley High School's one out of seven distinction is in 25% closing performance gaps. Kashmere High School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Wheatley High School. They make up for 54.19% of student population, followed by Hispanics (44.73%), Whites or Caucasians (0.41%), Native Americans (0.41%), Asians (0.14%) and Two or More Races (0.14%).
At Kashmere High School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 55.30% of student population, followed by Hispanics (41.89%), Whites or Caucasians (1.66%), Two or More Races (0.64%), Asians (0.26%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
Based on household incomes, Wheatley High School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 95.41% compared to 95.40% at Kashmere High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wheatley High School has 144 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 19.46% of student population. Kashmere High School has significantly more ELLs at 169 or about 21.58% of student population.
Wheatley High School’s bilingual students comprise 15.81%, gifted and talented students, 6.76%, while 18.65% are in the special education program. Kashmere High School bilingual students comprise 20.31%, gifted and talented students, 4.21%, and 17.11% are in the special education program.
Wheatley High School's 52 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11.3 years. Kashmere High School's 53 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 15.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wheatley High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Kashmere High School has eight teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, male teachers outnumber the female teachers. Wheatley High School employs 22 male teachers and 29 female teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs four staff members in the school administration department and 19 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Kashmere High School employs 26 male teachers and 26 female teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs five staff members in the school administration department and 16 more working as school support staff.
