As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. When we compared Wheatley High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Challenge Early College High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Wheatley High School’s regular student population is 740 with a student-teacher ratio of 14.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Challenge Early College High School is 476 students and a student-teacher ratio of 23.5 students/teacher ratio.
Wheatley High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 68 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 78 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Challenge Early College High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 97 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 98 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Wheatley High School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Closing the Gaps. Challenge Early College High School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Wheatley High School. They make up for 54.19% of student population, followed by Hispanics (44.73%), Whites or Caucasians (0.41%), Native Americans (0.41%), Asians (0.14%) and Two or More Races (0.14%).
At Challenge Early College High School, Hispanics make up 73.74% of student population, followed by African Americans (10.92%), Whites or Caucasians (8.40%), Asians (5.25%), Two or More Races (1.05%) and Native Americans (0.63%).
Based on household incomes, Wheatley High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 95.41% compared to 76.47% at Challenge Early College High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wheatley High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 19.46% of its student population compared to 10.92% at Challenge Early College High School.
In addition, Wheatley High School has 15.81% bilingual students, 6.76% are in the gifted and talented program, while 18.65% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Challenge Early College High School with 10.71% bilingual students, 35.08% gifted and talented students and 1.89% students in the special education program.
Wheatley High School's 52 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11.3 years. Challenge Early College High School's 20 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 11 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 17.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wheatley High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Challenge Early College High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, ten teachers have worked for 11-20 years, one teacher only has worked for 6-10 years, while two teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
Wheatley High School has four special education teachers assisted by 4 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Challenge Early College High School has zero special education teachers and 1 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
