Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Westbrook Intermediate, which is a part of CLEAR CREEK ISD, with Clear Creek Intermediate, which is a part of CLEAR CREEK ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Westbrook Intermediate’s regular student population is 1,156 with a 17.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Clear Creek Intermediate is 763 students and a 16.1 students/teacher ratio.
Westbrook Intermediate performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Clear Creek Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 73 in student achievement, 74 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 75 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Westbrook Intermediate's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Social Studies, post-secondary and with 25% student progress. Clear Creek Intermediate did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Westbrook Intermediate. They make up for 31.57% of student population, followed by Asians (27.42%), Whites or Caucasians (27.16%), African Americans (8.74%), Two or More Races (4.67%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
The student population at Clear Creek Intermediate is also predominantly by Hispanics at 44.95%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (33.42%), African Americans (15.47%), Two or More Races (4.46%), Asians (1.44%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
Based on household incomes, the Westbrook Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 37.28% compared to 59.90% at Clear Creek Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Westbrook Intermediate has 137 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.85% of student population. Clear Creek Intermediate has more ELLs at 147 or about 19.27% of student population.
Westbrook Intermediate’s bilingual students comprise 11.33%, gifted and talented students, 46.28%, while 9.60% are in the special education program. Clear Creek Intermediate bilingual students comprise 21.49%, gifted and talented students, 2.10%, and 16.12% are in the special education program.
Westbrook Intermediate's 67 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.2 years. Teachers at Clear Creek Intermediate, numbering 47 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 4.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Westbrook Intermediate has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 17 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Clear Creek Intermediate no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 17 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Westbrook Intermediate there are 47 female teachers and 20 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Clear Creek Intermediate there are 29 female teachers and 18 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
