Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Wells Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Kirk Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Wells Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,630 with a 21.3 students/teacher ratio while Kirk Elementary School has 890 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14 students/teacher ratio.
Wells Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 88 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Kirk Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 86 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 83 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Kirk Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in Science. Wells Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Wells Elementary School. They make up for 39.51% of student population, followed by Asians (23.93%), Hispanics (20.12%), African Americans (10.18%), Two or More Races (5.95%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
At Kirk Elementary School, Hispanics make up 66.97% of student population, followed by African Americans (11.46%), Whites or Caucasians (10.00%), Asians (6.74%), Two or More Races (2.47%) and Native Americans (2.25%).
Based on household incomes, the Wells Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 11.72% compared to 76.63% at Kirk Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wells Elementary School has 163 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 10.00% of student population. Kirk Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 417 or about 46.85% of student population.
Wells Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 9.14%, gifted and talented students, 13.44%, while 7.24% are in the special education program. Kirk Elementary School bilingual students comprise 45.84%, gifted and talented students, 2.70%, and 17.87% are in the special education program.
76 teachers employed at Wells Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.7 years. The 63 teachers at Kirk Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 4.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wells Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 23 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 22 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Kirk Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, ten teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 32 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Wells Elementary School there are 75 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
At Kirk Elementary School there are 58 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 13 special education teachers are being assisted by 29 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
