Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Wells Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Fiest Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Wells Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,630 with a 21.3 students/teacher ratio while Fiest Elementary School has 907 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.8 students/teacher ratio.
Wells Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 88 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Fiest Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 80 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Wells Elementary School and Fiest Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Wells Elementary School. They make up for 39.51% of student population, followed by Asians (23.93%), Hispanics (20.12%), African Americans (10.18%), Two or More Races (5.95%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
The student population at Fiest Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 38.92%, followed by African Americans (27.12%), Whites or Caucasians (18.74%), Asians (9.81%), Two or More Races (4.63%) and Native Americans (0.66%).
Based on household incomes, the Wells Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 11.72% compared to 67.70% at Fiest Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wells Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 10.00% of its student population compared to 13.34% at Fiest Elementary School.
Wells Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 9.14%, gifted and talented students, 13.44%, while 7.24% are in the special education program. Fiest Elementary School bilingual students comprise 12.90%, gifted and talented students, 3.86%, and 13.23% are in the special education program.
76 teachers employed at Wells Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.7 years. The 57 teachers at Fiest Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 9.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wells Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 23 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 23 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 22 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Fiest Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Wells Elementary School there are 75 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
At Fiest Elementary School there are 55 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by 18 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
