Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Walker Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Hoover Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Walker Elementary School has a regular student population of 975 with a 13.7 students/teacher ratio while Hoover Elementary School has 842 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.9 students/teacher ratio.
Walker Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 76 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Hoover Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted only 74 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Walker Elementary School and Hoover Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Walker Elementary School. They make up for 53.95% of student population, followed by African Americans (28.31%), Whites or Caucasians (9.95%), Two or More Races (4.00%), Asians (3.18%) and Native Americans (0.62%).
At Hoover Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 62.71% of student population, followed by African Americans (23.75%), Whites or Caucasians (6.06%), Asians (3.56%), Two or More Races (3.44%) and Native Americans (0.48%).
Based on household incomes, the Walker Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 79.08% compared to 84.44% at Hoover Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Walker Elementary School has 306 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 31.38% of student population. Hoover Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 323 or about 38.36% of student population.
Walker Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 30.97%, gifted and talented students, 1.85%, while 15.18% are in the special education program. Hoover Elementary School bilingual students comprise 38.00%, gifted and talented students, 0.24%, and 14.49% are in the special education program.
71 teachers employed at Walker Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.8 years. The 60 teachers at Hoover Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years.
Of its teaching staff, Walker Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 35 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
