Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared W R Hatfield Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHWEST ISD, with J C Thompson Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHWEST ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
W R Hatfield Elementary School has a regular student population of 515 with a 15 students/teacher ratio while J C Thompson Elementary School has 788 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.1 students/teacher ratio.

A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for W R Hatfield Elementary School and J C Thompson Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at W R Hatfield Elementary School. They make up for 50.49% of student population, followed by Hispanics (20.97%), African Americans (18.83%), Two or More Races (4.47%), Asians (3.50%) and Native Americans (0.78%).
The student population at J C Thompson Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 48.98%, followed by Hispanics (27.16%), African Americans (16.37%), Two or More Races (3.93%), Asians (2.79%) and Native Americans (0.51%).
Based on household incomes, the W R Hatfield Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 23.88% compared to 32.23% at J C Thompson Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, W R Hatfield Elementary School has 49 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 9.51% of student population. J C Thompson Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 61 or about 7.74% of student population.
W R Hatfield Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 9.13%, gifted and talented students, 10.29%, while 14.95% are in the special education program. J C Thompson Elementary School bilingual students comprise 7.61%, gifted and talented students, 5.20%, and 16.37% are in the special education program.
