Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Valley Ranch Elementary School, which is a part of NEW CANEY ISD, with Oakley Elementary School, which is a part of NEW CANEY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Valley Ranch Elementary School has a regular student population of 810 with a 15.9 students/teacher ratio while Oakley Elementary School has 777 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.4 students/teacher ratio.
Valley Ranch Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 83 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Oakley Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 58 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 76 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Valley Ranch Elementary School and Oakley Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Valley Ranch Elementary School. They make up for 51.48% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (37.78%), Two or More Races (4.57%), African Americans (3.95%), Asians (1.60%) and Native Americans (0.49%).
At Oakley Elementary School, Hispanics make up 69.11% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (25.74%), Two or More Races (2.45%), African Americans (1.29%), Asians (0.77%) and Native Americans (0.39%).
Based on household incomes, the Valley Ranch Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 60.49% compared to 84.04% at Oakley Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Valley Ranch Elementary School has 215 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 26.54% of student population. Oakley Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 412 or about 53.02% of student population.
In addition, Valley Ranch Elementary School has 32.96% bilingual students, 1.48% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.48% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Oakley Elementary School with 57.53% bilingual students, 3.35% gifted and talented students and 8.88% students in the special education program.
50 teachers employed at Valley Ranch Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.2 years. The 47 teachers at Oakley Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 4.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Valley Ranch Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, ten teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 17 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Oakley Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Valley Ranch Elementary School there are 47 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
