High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Travis County Day School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Anderson High School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Travis County Day School’s regular student population is 14 with a student-teacher ratio of 2.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Anderson High School is 2,229 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.6 students/teacher ratio.
Anderson High School earned a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 84 in school progress and 84 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, the performance indicators not applicable for Travis County Day School.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Anderson High School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and post-secondary. Travis County Day School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Travis County Day School. They make up for 57.14% of student population, followed by African Americans (42.86%). There is no Asians, Native Americans, Two or More Races and Whites or Caucasians students in the school.
The student population at Anderson High School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 52.18%, followed by Hispanics (29.61%), Asians (7.90%), Two or More Races (5.16%), African Americans (4.93%) and Native Americans (0.04%).
Based on household incomes, Travis County Day School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 64.29% compared to 23.01% at Anderson High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Travis County Day School has 4 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 28.57% of student population. Anderson High School has significantly more ELLs at 181 or about 8.12% of student population.
Travis County Day School has no gifted and talented student, while 42.86% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 28.57% students. Anderson High School 9.51% are in the special education program, 17.00% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 7.54% students.
Travis County Day School's five teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 4.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 8.8 years. Anderson High School's 126 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 10.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Travis County Day School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, no teacher serving the school for 20-30 years, two teachers have worked for 11-20 years, one teacher only has worked for 6-10 years, while two teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Anderson High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 15 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 36 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 32 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 32 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including ten beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Travis County Day School employs two female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one teacher is in special education without any assistance.
On the other hand, Anderson High School employs 67 female teachers and 59 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 14 special education teachers are being assisted by 24 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs five staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
