Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Thompson Intermediate, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Morris Middle School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Thompson Intermediate’s regular student population is 902 with a 13 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Morris Middle School is 714 students and a 11.6 students/teacher ratio.
Thompson Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Morris Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 78 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 92 in closing performance gaps and 91 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Morris Middle School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Thompson Intermediate has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Thompson Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 66.85% of student population, followed by African Americans (16.74%), Asians (8.98%), Whites or Caucasians (5.88%) and Two or More Races (1.44%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Morris Middle School, Hispanics make up 70.73% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.49%), Asians (6.16%), Whites or Caucasians (3.78%) and Two or More Races (0.70%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Thompson Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 65.74% compared to 78.71% at Morris Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Thompson Intermediate has 133 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 14.75% of student population. Morris Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 201 or about 28.15% of student population.
Thompson Intermediate’s bilingual students comprise 13.08%, gifted and talented students, 9.98%, while 11.42% are in the special education program. Morris Middle School bilingual students comprise 23.81%, gifted and talented students, 5.18%, and 15.55% are in the special education program.
Thompson Intermediate's 69 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.9 years. Teachers at Morris Middle School, numbering 61 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Thompson Intermediate has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Morris Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Thompson Intermediate there are 45 female teachers and 23 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Morris Middle School there are 44 female teachers and 17 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
