Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Thompson Intermediate, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Melillo Middle School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Thompson Intermediate’s regular student population is 902 with a 13 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Melillo Middle School is 606 students and a 11.1 students/teacher ratio.
Thompson Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Melillo Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 81 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 96 in closing performance gaps and 93 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Melillo Middle School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Thompson Intermediate has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Thompson Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 66.85% of student population, followed by African Americans (16.74%), Asians (8.98%), Whites or Caucasians (5.88%) and Two or More Races (1.44%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Melillo Middle School, Hispanics make up 69.97% of student population, followed by African Americans (15.35%), Asians (6.60%), Whites or Caucasians (6.11%), Two or More Races (1.49%) and Native Americans (0.33%).
Based on household incomes, Thompson Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 65.74% compared to 61.88% at Melillo Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Thompson Intermediate has a higher number of English Language Learners comprising 14.75% of its student population compared to 21.62% at Melillo Middle School.
In addition, Thompson Intermediate has 13.08% bilingual students, 9.98% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.42% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Melillo Middle School with 15.84% bilingual students, 11.22% gifted and talented students and 15.18% students in the special education program.
Thompson Intermediate's 69 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.9 years. Teachers at Melillo Middle School, numbering 54 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Thompson Intermediate has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. Melillo Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Thompson Intermediate there are 45 female teachers and 23 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 12 special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Melillo Middle School there are 48 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
