Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Thompson Intermediate, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Marshall Kendrick Middle School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Thompson Intermediate’s regular student population is 902 with a 13 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Marshall Kendrick Middle School is 727 students and a 12.9 students/teacher ratio.
Thompson Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Marshall Kendrick Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 70 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Thompson Intermediate and Marshall Kendrick Middle School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Thompson Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 66.85% of student population, followed by African Americans (16.74%), Asians (8.98%), Whites or Caucasians (5.88%) and Two or More Races (1.44%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Marshall Kendrick Middle School, Hispanics make up 85.42% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.29%), Whites or Caucasians (6.05%), Two or More Races (0.55%), Asians (0.41%) and Native Americans (0.14%).
Based on household incomes, the Thompson Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 65.74% compared to 85.83% at Marshall Kendrick Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Thompson Intermediate has 133 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 14.75% of student population. Marshall Kendrick Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 286 or about 39.34% of student population.
Thompson Intermediate’s bilingual students comprise 13.08%, gifted and talented students, 9.98%, while 11.42% are in the special education program. Marshall Kendrick Middle School bilingual students comprise 40.44%, gifted and talented students, 8.53%, and 14.31% are in the special education program.
Thompson Intermediate's 69 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.9 years. Teachers at Marshall Kendrick Middle School, numbering 56 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Thompson Intermediate has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
