Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Thompson Elementary School, which is a part of MESQUITE ISD, with Austin Elementary School, which is a part of MESQUITE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Thompson Elementary School has a regular student population of 614 with a 17.1 students/teacher ratio while Austin Elementary School has 328 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.2 students/teacher ratio.
Thompson Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 59 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Austin Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 75 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 80 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Austin Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Thompson Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Thompson Elementary School. They make up for 64.82% of student population, followed by Hispanics (20.68%), Whites or Caucasians (7.82%), Two or More Races (4.07%), Asians (2.28%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
The student population at Austin Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 42.68%, followed by African Americans (25.30%), Whites or Caucasians (24.09%), Asians (4.57%) and Two or More Races (3.05%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Thompson Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 79.80% compared to 66.77% at Austin Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Thompson Elementary School has 42 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 6.84% of student population. Austin Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 54 or about 16.46% of student population.
In addition, Thompson Elementary School has 6.03% bilingual students, 2.61% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.89% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Austin Elementary School with 15.85% bilingual students, 3.35% gifted and talented students and 14.63% students in the special education program.
