Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Teague Middle School, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, with Houston Academy, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Teague Middle School’s regular student population is 1,312 with a 17 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Houston Academy is 397 students and a 11.8 students/teacher ratio.
Teague Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 54 in student achievement, 59 in school progress and 69 in closing performance gaps. It scored 59 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Houston Academy earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 79 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 78 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Teague Middle School and Houston Academy are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Teague Middle School. They make up for 64.94% of student population, followed by African Americans (30.49%), Whites or Caucasians (1.75%), Two or More Races (1.14%), Asians (1.07%) and Native Americans (0.53%).
At Houston Academy, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 57.93% of student population, followed by Hispanics (38.79%), Two or More Races (1.51%), Whites or Caucasians (1.01%), Native Americans (0.50%) and Asians (0.25%).
Based on household incomes, Teague Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 89.79% compared to 89.17% at Houston Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Teague Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 35.21% of its student population compared to 21.91% at Houston Academy.
In addition, Teague Middle School has 34.53% bilingual students, 2.82% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.90% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Houston Academy with 21.41% bilingual students, 7.56% gifted and talented students and 8.31% students in the special education program.
Teague Middle School's 77 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 4.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.3 years. Teachers at Houston Academy, numbering 33 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 10.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14 years.
Of its teaching staff, Teague Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 17 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 30 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 11 beginning teachers. Houston Academy has six teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, three teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Teague Middle School there are 47 female teachers and 29 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
At Houston Academy there are 27 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
