Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Teague Elementary School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Richey Elementary School, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Teague Elementary School has a regular student population of 737 with a 14.1 students/teacher ratio while Richey Elementary School has 505 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.1 students/teacher ratio.
Teague Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Richey Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 59 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 67 in closing performance gaps and 68 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Teague Elementary School and Richey Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Teague Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 72.86% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (10.85%), Asians (9.91%), African Americans (5.56%) and Two or More Races (0.81%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Richey Elementary School, Hispanics make up 94.85% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (3.56%), African Americans (1.19%), Native Americans (0.20%) and Two or More Races (0.20%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Teague Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 70.01% compared to 95.25% at Richey Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Teague Elementary School has 247 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 33.51% of student population. Richey Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 318 or about 62.97% of student population.
In addition, Teague Elementary School has 26.32% bilingual students, 2.17% are in the gifted and talented program, while 15.60% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Richey Elementary School with 60.20% bilingual students, 2.38% gifted and talented students and 11.49% students in the special education program.
52 teachers employed at Teague Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.8 years. The 41 teachers at Richey Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Teague Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 17 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Richey Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, six teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Teague Elementary School there are 50 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by 22 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
