Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. When we compared Tanglewood Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Young Women's College Prep Academy, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Tanglewood Middle School’s regular student population is 868 with a 17.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Young Women's College Prep Academy is 427 students and a 14.5 students/teacher ratio.
Tanglewood Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Young Women's College Prep Academy's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Tanglewood Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Tanglewood Middle School. They make up for 49.65% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (20.28%), African Americans (17.97%), Asians (8.53%), Two or More Races (3.00%) and Native Americans (0.46%).
The student population at Young Women's College Prep Academy is also predominantly by African Americans at 50.35%, followed by Hispanics (42.62%), Whites or Caucasians (3.04%), Asians (1.64%), Two or More Races (1.64%) and Native Americans (0.47%).
Based on household incomes, the Tanglewood Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 58.41% compared to 69.79% at Young Women's College Prep Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Tanglewood Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 23.85% of its student population compared to 6.56% at Young Women's College Prep Academy.
In addition, Tanglewood Middle School has 23.16% bilingual students, 20.05% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.10% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Young Women's College Prep Academy with 7.96% bilingual students, 34.89% gifted and talented students and 1.87% students in the special education program.

Young Women's College Prep Academy has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Tanglewood Middle School there are 28 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
