Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Tanglewood Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sharpstown International School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Tanglewood Middle School’s regular student population is 868 with a 17.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Sharpstown International School is 1,304 students and a 17.1 students/teacher ratio.
Tanglewood Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sharpstown International School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 89 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 86 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Sharpstown International School's two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and 25% closing performance gaps. Tanglewood Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Tanglewood Middle School. They make up for 49.65% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (20.28%), African Americans (17.97%), Asians (8.53%), Two or More Races (3.00%) and Native Americans (0.46%).
At Sharpstown International School, Hispanics make up 82.52% of student population, followed by Asians (8.51%), African Americans (6.44%), Whites or Caucasians (1.99%), Native Americans (0.23%) and Two or More Races (0.23%).
Based on household incomes, the Tanglewood Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 58.41% compared to 97.70% at Sharpstown International School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Tanglewood Middle School has 207 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 23.85% of student population. Sharpstown International School has significantly more ELLs at 359 or about 27.53% of student population.
In addition, Tanglewood Middle School has 23.16% bilingual students, 20.05% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.10% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sharpstown International School with 26.99% bilingual students, 24.77% gifted and talented students and 6.44% students in the special education program.
Tanglewood Middle School's 48 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.1 years. Teachers at Sharpstown International School, numbering 76 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Tanglewood Middle School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Sharpstown International School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 19 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Tanglewood Middle School there are 28 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
At Sharpstown International School there are 53 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
