Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Tanglewood Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Revere Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Tanglewood Middle School’s regular student population is 868 with a 17.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Revere Middle School is 1,109 students and a 16 students/teacher ratio.
Tanglewood Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Revere Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 58 in student achievement, 66 in school progress, 73 in closing performance gaps and 68 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Tanglewood Middle School and Revere Middle School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Tanglewood Middle School. They make up for 49.65% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (20.28%), African Americans (17.97%), Asians (8.53%), Two or More Races (3.00%) and Native Americans (0.46%).
At Revere Middle School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 55.28% of student population, followed by African Americans (31.65%), Whites or Caucasians (7.75%), Asians (3.79%), Two or More Races (1.08%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
Based on household incomes, the Tanglewood Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 58.41% compared to 91.97% at Revere Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Tanglewood Middle School has 207 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 23.85% of student population. Revere Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 485 or about 43.73% of student population.
Tanglewood Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 23.16%, gifted and talented students, 20.05%, while 9.10% are in the special education program. Revere Middle School bilingual students comprise 42.83%, gifted and talented students, 8.21%, and 9.74% are in the special education program.
Tanglewood Middle School's 48 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.1 years. Teachers at Revere Middle School, numbering 69 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Tanglewood Middle School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Revere Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 24 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 12 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Tanglewood Middle School there are 28 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
At Revere Middle School there are 48 female teachers and 21 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
