Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Tanglewood Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with McReynolds Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Tanglewood Middle School’s regular student population is 868 with a 17.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at McReynolds Middle School is 470 students and a 15.3 students/teacher ratio.
Tanglewood Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, McReynolds Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 53 in student achievement, 66 in school progress, 70 in closing performance gaps and 67 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Tanglewood Middle School and McReynolds Middle School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Tanglewood Middle School. They make up for 49.65% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (20.28%), African Americans (17.97%), Asians (8.53%), Two or More Races (3.00%) and Native Americans (0.46%).
At McReynolds Middle School, Hispanics make up 74.47% of student population, followed by African Americans (24.68%), Whites or Caucasians (0.43%) and Native Americans (0.43%). There is no Asians and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Tanglewood Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 58.41% compared to 97.87% at McReynolds Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Tanglewood Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 23.85% of its student population compared to 34.89% at McReynolds Middle School.
Tanglewood Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 23.16%, gifted and talented students, 20.05%, while 9.10% are in the special education program. McReynolds Middle School bilingual students comprise 33.19%, gifted and talented students, 8.09%, and 17.23% are in the special education program.
