When we compared Tanglewood Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Fleming Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Tanglewood Middle School’s regular student population is 868 with a 17.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Fleming Middle School is 380 students and a 12.5 students/teacher ratio.
Tanglewood Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 77 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 76 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Fleming Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 81 in closing performance gaps and 84 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Fleming Middle School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Tanglewood Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Tanglewood Middle School. They make up for 49.65% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (20.28%), African Americans (17.97%), Asians (8.53%), Two or More Races (3.00%) and Native Americans (0.46%).
At Fleming Middle School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 60.26% of student population, followed by Hispanics (38.42%), Whites or Caucasians (0.79%) and Two or More Races (0.53%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Tanglewood Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 58.41% compared to 97.37% at Fleming Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Tanglewood Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 23.85% of its student population compared to 21.84% at Fleming Middle School.
Tanglewood Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 23.16%, gifted and talented students, 20.05%, while 9.10% are in the special education program. Fleming Middle School bilingual students comprise 20.00%, gifted and talented students, 3.95%, and 17.37% are in the special education program.
