As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Sunset High School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, with Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Sunset High School’s regular student population is 2,159 with a student-teacher ratio of 17.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy is 353 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.7 students/teacher ratio.
Sunset High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 74 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 81 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 97 in student achievement, 95 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 94 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Sunset High School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth. Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Sunset High School is Hispanics who make up nearly 96.25% of student population, followed by African Americans (1.62%), Whites or Caucasians (1.44%), Native Americans (0.32%), Asians (0.19%) and Two or More Races (0.14%).
The student population at Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy is also predominantly by Hispanics at 52.12%, followed by African Americans (45.61%), Asians (1.13%), Whites or Caucasians (0.57%) and Two or More Races (0.57%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Sunset High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 82.58% compared to 69.69% at Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sunset High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 47.29% of its student population compared to 28.33% at Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy.
In addition, Sunset High School has 42.66% bilingual students, 13.39% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.12% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy with 26.91% bilingual students, 31.16% gifted and talented students and 1.42% students in the special education program.
Sunset High School's 125 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 8.8 years. Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy's 19 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 11.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Sunset High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 28 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 30 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 49 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers. Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while four teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, male teachers outnumber the female teachers. Sunset High School employs 58 male teachers and 67 female teachers. Of its teaching staff, 15 special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and 13 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy employs eight male teachers and 11 female teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by one teacher only aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs two staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
