Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Sst The Woodlands, which is a part of SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, with Sst Schertz, which is a part of SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Sst The Woodlands has a regular student population of 515 with a 11.5 students/teacher ratio while Sst Schertz has 229 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.6 students/teacher ratio.
Sst The Woodlands earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 71 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 89 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Sst Schertz performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 94 in student achievement, 97 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 98 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Sst The Woodlands’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth. Sst Schertz's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Sst The Woodlands. They make up for 56.12% of student population, followed by African Americans (29.32%), Whites or Caucasians (6.99%), Asians (3.69%), Two or More Races (2.91%) and Native Americans (0.78%).
The student population at Sst Schertz is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 44.98%, followed by Hispanics (37.99%), African Americans (12.23%), Asians (3.49%) and Two or More Races (0.87%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Sst The Woodlands’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 77.86% compared to 21.83% at Sst Schertz.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sst The Woodlands has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 26.02% of its student population compared to 2.62% at Sst Schertz.
In addition, Sst The Woodlands has 25.63% bilingual students, 4.08% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.49% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sst Schertz with 2.62% bilingual students, 4.37% gifted and talented students and 5.68% students in the special education program.
44 teachers employed at Sst The Woodlands have been teaching in the school for an average of about 1.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 4.9 years. The 15 teachers at Sst Schertz have been serving the school for an average of 1 year with individual teaching experience averaging 4.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Sst The Woodlands no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, three teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including ten beginning teachers. Sst Schertz no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, one teacher only has worked for 11-20 years, three teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Sst The Woodlands there are 35 female teachers and eight male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department.
