Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Sst Champions's three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and with 25% student progress. Sst Spring’s only distinction designation is in Social Studies.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Sst Champions. They make up for 41.22% of student population, followed by African Americans (37.50%), Whites or Caucasians (11.01%), Asians (4.17%), Two or More Races (3.57%) and Native Americans (2.08%).
The student population at Sst Spring is also predominantly by Hispanics at 43.74%, followed by African Americans (30.24%), Whites or Caucasians (17.72%), Asians (4.46%), Two or More Races (2.85%) and Native Americans (0.74%).
Based on household incomes, Sst Champions’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 64.73% compared to 56.26% at Sst Spring.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Sst Champions has 159 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 23.66% of student population. Sst Spring has significantly more ELLs at 193 or about 23.92% of student population.
In addition, Sst Champions has 22.77% bilingual students, 3.87% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.23% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sst Spring with 22.92% bilingual students, 7.68% gifted and talented students and 8.55% students in the special education program.
52 teachers employed at Sst Champions have been teaching in the school for an average of about 0.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 5 years. The 43 teachers at Sst Spring have been serving the school for an average of 1 year with individual teaching experience averaging 5.8 years.
