Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Springwoods Village Middle School, which is a part of SPRING ISD, with Dueitt Middle School, which is a part of SPRING ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Springwoods Village Middle School’s regular student population is 499 with a 15.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Dueitt Middle School is 857 students and a 15.8 students/teacher ratio.
Springwoods Village Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 65 in student achievement, 69 in school progress and 75 in closing performance gaps. It scored 71 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Dueitt Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 56 in student achievement, 63 in school progress, 70 in closing performance gaps and 65 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Springwoods Village Middle School and Dueitt Middle School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Springwoods Village Middle School. They make up for 42.48% of student population, followed by African Americans (39.88%), Whites or Caucasians (11.22%), Two or More Races (3.21%), Asians (2.81%) and Native Americans (0.20%).
The student population at Dueitt Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 49.71%, followed by African Americans (37.81%), Whites or Caucasians (7.93%), Two or More Races (2.33%), Native Americans (1.17%) and Asians (0.70%).
Based on household incomes, the Springwoods Village Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 71.74% compared to 87.28% at Dueitt Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Springwoods Village Middle School has 77 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 15.43% of student population. Dueitt Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 218 or about 25.44% of student population.
Springwoods Village Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 13.83%, gifted and talented students, 12.02%, while 9.62% are in the special education program. Dueitt Middle School bilingual students comprise 22.99%, gifted and talented students, 6.77%, and 13.65% are in the special education program.
Springwoods Village Middle School's 31 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 3.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6 years. Teachers at Dueitt Middle School, numbering 54 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 4.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Springwoods Village Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 11 beginning teachers. Dueitt Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including ten beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Springwoods Village Middle School there are 21 female teachers and ten male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Dueitt Middle School there are 31 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
