Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. When we compared Spillane Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Hopper Middle School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Spillane Middle School’s regular student population is 1,571 with a 17.3 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Hopper Middle School is 1,047 students and a 14.7 students/teacher ratio.
Spillane Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 98 in closing performance gaps. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Hopper Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 71 in student achievement, 80 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Spillane Middle School's seven out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Hopper Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Spillane Middle School. They make up for 43.09% of student population, followed by Hispanics (25.59%), Asians (14.19%), African Americans (12.48%), Two or More Races (4.26%) and Native Americans (0.32%).
The student population at Hopper Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 52.82%, followed by African Americans (34.19%), Whites or Caucasians (6.49%), Asians (3.06%), Two or More Races (2.58%) and Native Americans (0.86%).
Based on household incomes, the Spillane Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 29.28% compared to 80.80% at Hopper Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Spillane Middle School has 82 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 5.22% of student population. Hopper Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 177 or about 16.91% of student population.
Spillane Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 4.65%, gifted and talented students, 18.84%, while 8.91% are in the special education program. Hopper Middle School bilingual students comprise 15.76%, gifted and talented students, 3.63%, and 11.46% are in the special education program.
Spillane Middle School's 90 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 10.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.5 years. Teachers at Hopper Middle School, numbering 71 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Spillane Middle School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 18 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 28 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 16 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 24 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Hopper Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 24 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 17 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Spillane Middle School there are 64 female teachers and 26 male teachers. At Hopper Middle School there are 51 female teachers and 19 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 17 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
