Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Schenck Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Dorie Miller Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Schenck Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 92.83% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (3.68%), African Americans (2.94%), Asians (0.18%), Native Americans (0.18%) and Two or More Races (0.18%).
At Dorie Miller Elementary School, Hispanics make up 87.73% of student population, followed by African Americans (10.41%) and Whites or Caucasians (1.86%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Schenck Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 90.26% compared to 93.68% at Dorie Miller Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Schenck Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 31.25% of its student population compared to 52.42% at Dorie Miller Elementary School.
In addition, Schenck Elementary School has 35.66% bilingual students, 2.76% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.87% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Dorie Miller Elementary School with 55.39% bilingual students, 3.35% gifted and talented students and 14.13% students in the special education program.
