Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Scarborough Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, with Steubing Elementary School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Scarborough Elementary School has a regular student population of 783 with a 14.8 students/teacher ratio while Steubing Elementary School has 457 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.1 students/teacher ratio.
Scarborough Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Steubing Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 98 in closing performance gaps and 97 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Steubing Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Scarborough Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Scarborough Elementary School. They make up for 57.34% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (22.35%), African Americans (8.30%), Two or More Races (7.92%) and Asians (3.58%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Steubing Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 50.33%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (26.26%), Asians (11.82%), Two or More Races (7.66%) and African Americans (3.94%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Scarborough Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 27.08% compared to 39.82% at Steubing Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Scarborough Elementary School has 35 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.47% of student population. Steubing Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 87 or about 19.04% of student population.
In addition, Scarborough Elementary School has 0.38% bilingual students, 3.96% are in the gifted and talented program, while 17.75% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Steubing Elementary School with 17.07% bilingual students, 6.13% gifted and talented students and 12.69% students in the special education program.
52 teachers employed at Scarborough Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9 years. The 34 teachers at Steubing Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 11.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Scarborough Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 17 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Steubing Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, three teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Scarborough Elementary School there are 48 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
At Steubing Elementary School there are 33 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
