Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Rucker Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Anderson Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Rucker Elementary School has a regular student population of 371 with a 13.7 students/teacher ratio while Anderson Elementary School has 630 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.2 students/teacher ratio.
Rucker Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 60 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Anderson Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 64 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Rucker Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and with 25% student progress. Except for Science, Anderson Elementary School earned one out of seven distinctions.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Rucker Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 94.34% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.96%) and Whites or Caucasians (2.70%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
At Anderson Elementary School, Hispanics make up 76.83% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.89%), Asians (1.90%), Whites or Caucasians (1.59%) and Two or More Races (0.63%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Rucker Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 95.96% compared to 93.02% at Anderson Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Rucker Elementary School has 187 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 50.40% of student population. Anderson Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 349 or about 55.40% of student population.
In addition, Rucker Elementary School has 54.99% bilingual students, 3.23% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.48% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Anderson Elementary School with 53.97% bilingual students, 3.65% gifted and talented students and 5.87% students in the special education program.
