Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Reuben Johnson Elementary School, which is a part of MCKINNEY ISD, with Finch Elementary School, which is a part of MCKINNEY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Reuben Johnson Elementary School has a regular student population of 407 with a 12.6 students/teacher ratio while Finch Elementary School has 333 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10 students/teacher ratio.
Reuben Johnson Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 88 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 86 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Finch Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 82 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Finch Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Reuben Johnson Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Reuben Johnson Elementary School. They make up for 53.07% of student population, followed by Hispanics (16.71%), African Americans (15.48%), Asians (8.35%), Two or More Races (6.14%) and Native Americans (0.25%).
At Finch Elementary School, Hispanics make up 75.98% of student population, followed by African Americans (10.21%), Whites or Caucasians (9.01%), Two or More Races (2.40%), Asians (1.80%) and Native Americans (0.60%).
Based on household incomes, the Reuben Johnson Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 24.08% compared to 73.27% at Finch Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Reuben Johnson Elementary School has 25 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 6.14% of student population. Finch Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 204 or about 61.26% of student population.
Reuben Johnson Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 6.14%, gifted and talented students, 12.78%, while 18.18% are in the special education program. Finch Elementary School bilingual students comprise 60.66%, gifted and talented students, 4.50%, and 21.32% are in the special education program.
