Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Red Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Bellfort Early Childhood Center, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Red Elementary School has a regular student population of 585 with a 18.1 students/teacher ratio while Bellfort Early Childhood Center has 366 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.2 students/teacher ratio.
Red Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 86 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Bellfort Early Childhood Center earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted only 83 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Red Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Bellfort Early Childhood Center did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Red Elementary School. They make up for 61.37% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.44%), Whites or Caucasians (14.19%), Asians (4.10%), Two or More Races (2.74%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
At Bellfort Early Childhood Center, Hispanics make up 80.87% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.49%), Whites or Caucasians (1.37%) and Asians (0.27%). There is no Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Red Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 70.77% compared to 98.91% at Bellfort Early Childhood Center.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Red Elementary School has 165 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 28.21% of student population. Bellfort Early Childhood Center has significantly more ELLs at 237 or about 64.75% of student population.
Red Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 25.81%, gifted and talented students, 13.68%, while 11.62% are in the special education program. Bellfort Early Childhood Center bilingual students comprise 64.48%, gifted and talented students, 1.09%, and 6.56% are in the special education program.
32 teachers employed at Red Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.7 years. The 21 teachers at Bellfort Early Childhood Center have been serving the school for an average of 9.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Red Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Bellfort Early Childhood Center no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while three teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Red Elementary School there are 27 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has zero staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Bellfort Early Childhood Center there are 19 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five teachers are aides or paraprofessionals.
