Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Red Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Askew Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Red Elementary School has a regular student population of 585 with a 18.1 students/teacher ratio while Askew Elementary School has 886 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18 students/teacher ratio.
Red Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 86 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Askew Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 73 in student achievement, 90 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only five distinction designations or awards for outstanding performance. These are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Red Elementary School. They make up for 61.37% of student population, followed by African Americans (17.44%), Whites or Caucasians (14.19%), Asians (4.10%), Two or More Races (2.74%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
The student population at Askew Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 42.21%, followed by Hispanics (33.86%), Whites or Caucasians (10.50%), Asians (9.82%), Two or More Races (3.39%) and Native Americans (0.11%).
Based on household incomes, the Red Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 70.77% compared to 75.40% at Askew Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Red Elementary School has 165 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 28.21% of student population. Askew Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 243 or about 27.43% of student population.
In addition, Red Elementary School has 25.81% bilingual students, 13.68% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.62% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Askew Elementary School with 27.65% bilingual students, 19.41% gifted and talented students and 5.87% students in the special education program.
32 teachers employed at Red Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.7 years. The 49 teachers at Askew Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 12 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Red Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Askew Elementary School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Red Elementary School there are 27 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has zero staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Askew Elementary School there are 39 female teachers and ten male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
