Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Rayburn Middle School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, with Folks Middle School, which is a part of NORTHSIDE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Rayburn Middle School’s regular student population is 826 with a 13 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Folks Middle School is 1,315 students and a 16.9 students/teacher ratio.
Rayburn Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 62 in student achievement, 70 in school progress and 73 in closing performance gaps. It scored 71 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Folks Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 88 in student achievement, 86 in school progress, 83 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Folks Middle School's one out of seven distinction is in Social Studies. Rayburn Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Rayburn Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 86.44% of student population, followed by African Americans (7.63%), Whites or Caucasians (4.12%), Two or More Races (1.45%), Asians (0.24%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
At Folks Middle School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 61.90% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (22.51%), African Americans (7.68%), Two or More Races (3.80%) and Asians (3.50%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Rayburn Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 85.47% compared to 27.45% at Folks Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Rayburn Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 12.59% of its student population compared to 4.64% at Folks Middle School.
In addition, Rayburn Middle School has 11.14% bilingual students, 6.78% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.46% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Folks Middle School with 3.42% bilingual students, 9.20% gifted and talented students and 11.63% students in the special education program.
Rayburn Middle School's 63 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.4 years. Teachers at Folks Middle School, numbering 77 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.8 years.

In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Rayburn Middle School there are 41 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by seven teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
