Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared R D S P D, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Laurenzo Early Childhood Ctr, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
R D S P D has a regular student population of 32 with a 2.9 students/teacher ratio while Laurenzo Early Childhood Ctr has 187 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.6 students/teacher ratio.
Laurenzo Early Childhood Ctr earned a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on no domain. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The student achievement is not applicable, school progress is not applicable and closing performance gaps not applicable. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, the performance indicators not applicable for R D S P D.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for R D S P D and Laurenzo Early Childhood Ctr are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at R D S P D. They make up for 37.50% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.38%), African Americans (18.75%), Asians (3.13%), Native Americans (3.13%) and Two or More Races (3.13%).
At Laurenzo Early Childhood Ctr, Hispanics make up 96.26% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.67%), Whites or Caucasians (0.53%) and Two or More Races (0.53%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the R D S P D’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 21.88% compared to 95.72% at Laurenzo Early Childhood Ctr.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, R D S P D has no English Language Learners or ELLS. Laurenzo Early Childhood Ctr has significantly more ELLs at 85 or about 45.45% of student population.
R D S P D has no gifted and talented and bilingual students, while 6.25% are in the special education program. Laurenzo Early Childhood Ctr has no gifted and talented student, while 5.88% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 85.56% students.
11 teachers employed at R D S P D have been teaching in the school for an average of about 12.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.9 years. The 12 teachers at Laurenzo Early Childhood Ctr have been serving the school for an average of 11.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 14.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, R D S P D has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, three teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while one teacher only has been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Laurenzo Early Childhood Ctr no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, no teacher serving the school for 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At R D S P D there are ten female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, 11 teachers are in special education without any assistance.
At Laurenzo Early Childhood Ctr there are 11 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, five teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and two more working as school support staff.
