Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared R D S P D, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Hobby Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
R D S P D has a regular student population of 32 with a 2.9 students/teacher ratio while Hobby Elementary School has 569 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.4 students/teacher ratio.
Hobby Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 54 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, the performance indicators not applicable for R D S P D.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for R D S P D and Hobby Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at R D S P D. They make up for 37.50% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.38%), African Americans (18.75%), Asians (3.13%), Native Americans (3.13%) and Two or More Races (3.13%).
At Hobby Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 61.86% of student population, followed by African Americans (36.03%), Two or More Races (0.88%), Whites or Caucasians (0.70%) and Asians (0.18%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the R D S P D’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 21.88% compared to 88.93% at Hobby Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, R D S P D has no English Language Learners or ELLS. Hobby Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 273 or about 47.98% of student population.
R D S P D has no gifted and talented and bilingual students, while 6.25% are in the special education program. Hobby Elementary School 7.91% are in the special education program, 3.16% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 52.55% students.
11 teachers employed at R D S P D have been teaching in the school for an average of about 12.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.9 years. The 32 teachers at Hobby Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, R D S P D has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, three teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while one teacher only has been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Hobby Elementary School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At R D S P D there are ten female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, 11 teachers are in special education without any assistance.
At Hobby Elementary School there are 23 female teachers and nine male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
