Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Postma Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Emery Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Postma Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,132 with a 17.8 students/teacher ratio while Emery Elementary School has 1,040 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.2 students/teacher ratio.
Postma Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 98 in closing performance gaps. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Emery Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 70 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 78 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Postma Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Emery Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Postma Elementary School. They make up for 29.42% of student population, followed by African Americans (28.45%), Whites or Caucasians (18.46%), Asians (18.46%), Two or More Races (4.95%) and Native Americans (0.09%).
The student population at Emery Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 51.44%, followed by African Americans (32.40%), Whites or Caucasians (6.83%), Asians (5.29%), Two or More Races (3.46%) and Native Americans (0.38%).
Based on household incomes, the Postma Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 44.52% compared to 80.96% at Emery Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Postma Elementary School has 258 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 22.79% of student population. Emery Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 345 or about 33.17% of student population.
Postma Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 22.00%, gifted and talented students, 3.36%, while 10.60% are in the special education program. Emery Elementary School bilingual students comprise 32.69%, gifted and talented students, 1.44%, and 18.56% are in the special education program.
63 teachers employed at Postma Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.3 years. The 73 teachers at Emery Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 4.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.5 years.
