Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Postma Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Adam Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Postma Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,132 with a 17.8 students/teacher ratio while Adam Elementary School has 804 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.7 students/teacher ratio.
Postma Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 98 in closing performance gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Postma Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Adam Elementary School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Postma Elementary School. They make up for 29.42% of student population, followed by African Americans (28.45%), Whites or Caucasians (18.46%), Asians (18.46%), Two or More Races (4.95%) and Native Americans (0.09%).
The student population at Adam Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 46.52%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (26.24%), African Americans (12.31%), Asians (9.08%), Two or More Races (5.10%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
Based on household incomes, the Postma Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 44.52% compared to 71.52% at Adam Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Postma Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 22.79% of its student population compared to 24.00% at Adam Elementary School.
Postma Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 22.00%, gifted and talented students, 3.36%, while 10.60% are in the special education program. Adam Elementary School bilingual students comprise 23.51%, gifted and talented students, 2.61%, and 14.18% are in the special education program.

The 75 teachers at Adam Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 10.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.8 years.
