Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Pope Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Wilson Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Pope Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,096 with a 16.6 students/teacher ratio while Wilson Elementary School has 751 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.7 students/teacher ratio.
Pope Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 96 in student achievement, 95 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It is in this area where the two schools differ. Pope Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Wilson Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Pope Elementary School. They make up for 46.99% of student population, followed by Hispanics (20.07%), Asians (20.07%), African Americans (7.39%), Two or More Races (5.29%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
The student population at Wilson Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 41.41%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (19.31%), African Americans (18.77%), Asians (14.38%), Two or More Races (5.06%) and Native Americans (0.93%).
Based on household incomes, the Pope Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 12.59% compared to 63.38% at Wilson Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Pope Elementary School has 138 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 12.59% of student population. Wilson Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 167 or about 22.24% of student population.
Pope Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 12.14%, gifted and talented students, 15.69%, while 11.13% are in the special education program. Wilson Elementary School bilingual students comprise 21.17%, gifted and talented students, 2.80%, and 12.52% are in the special education program.
