Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Poe Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Elmore Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Poe Elementary School has a regular student population of 784 with a 18.2 students/teacher ratio while Elmore Elementary School has 570 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.2 students/teacher ratio.
Poe Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Elmore Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 50 in student achievement, 67 in school progress, 66 in closing performance gaps and 67 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Poe Elementary School and Elmore Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Poe Elementary School. They make up for 35.84% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.57%), Asians (11.35%), African Americans (9.69%) and Two or More Races (8.29%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Elmore Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 57.37% of student population, followed by African Americans (40.88%), Whites or Caucasians (0.88%), Two or More Races (0.70%) and Asians (0.18%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Poe Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 30.36% compared to 97.72% at Elmore Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Poe Elementary School has 188 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 23.98% of student population. Elmore Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 230 or about 40.35% of student population.
Poe Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 23.60%, gifted and talented students, 16.45%, while 4.97% are in the special education program. Elmore Elementary School bilingual students comprise 38.77%, gifted and talented students, 0.88%, and 10.35% are in the special education program.
43 teachers employed at Poe Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.2 years. The 33 teachers at Elmore Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Poe Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers. Elmore Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Poe Elementary School there are 38 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
