Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Poe Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Ashford Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Poe Elementary School has a regular student population of 784 with a 18.2 students/teacher ratio while Ashford Elementary School has 564 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16 students/teacher ratio.
Poe Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 87 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Ashford Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 60 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 86 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Poe Elementary School and Ashford Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Poe Elementary School. They make up for 35.84% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (34.57%), Asians (11.35%), African Americans (9.69%) and Two or More Races (8.29%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Ashford Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 51.95%, followed by Hispanics (34.57%), Whites or Caucasians (7.80%), Asians (3.19%), Two or More Races (1.95%) and Native Americans (0.53%).
Based on household incomes, the Poe Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 30.36% compared to 87.41% at Ashford Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Poe Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 23.98% of its student population compared to 25.18% at Ashford Elementary School.
Poe Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 23.60%, gifted and talented students, 16.45%, while 4.97% are in the special education program. Ashford Elementary School bilingual students comprise 31.91%, gifted and talented students, 3.90%, and 8.33% are in the special education program.
43 teachers employed at Poe Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 5.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.2 years. The 35 teachers at Ashford Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.9 years.

In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Poe Elementary School there are 38 female teachers and five male teachers.
