Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Pinnacle Intermediate, which is a part of CANYON ISD, with Canyon Intermediate, which is a part of CANYON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Pinnacle Intermediate’s regular student population is 561 with a 17.4 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Canyon Intermediate is 530 students and a 17.3 students/teacher ratio.
Pinnacle Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 88 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 88 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Canyon Intermediate performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 88 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 94 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Canyon Intermediate's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Pinnacle Intermediate has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Pinnacle Intermediate. They make up for 56.68% of student population, followed by Hispanics (34.76%), African Americans (3.57%), Two or More Races (2.85%) and Asians (2.14%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Canyon Intermediate, Whites or Caucasians make up 73.77% of student population, followed by Hispanics (21.51%), Two or More Races (2.08%), African Americans (1.32%), Asians (0.94%) and Native Americans (0.38%).
Based on household incomes, Pinnacle Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 41.35% compared to 28.87% at Canyon Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Pinnacle Intermediate has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 6.42% of its student population compared to 1.70% at Canyon Intermediate.
In addition, Pinnacle Intermediate has 6.42% bilingual students, 3.03% are in the gifted and talented program, while 14.26% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Canyon Intermediate with 1.70% bilingual students, 4.34% gifted and talented students and 9.81% students in the special education program.
Pinnacle Intermediate's 32 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.9 years. Teachers at Canyon Intermediate, numbering 30 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Pinnacle Intermediate has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Canyon Intermediate has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while four teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Pinnacle Intermediate there are 27 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
