Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Pillow Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Pecan Springs Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Pillow Elementary School has a regular student population of 376 with a 11.5 students/teacher ratio while Pecan Springs Elementary School has 248 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.6 students/teacher ratio.
Pillow Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 67 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and 72 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Pecan Springs Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 51 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 59 in closing performance gaps and 59 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Pillow Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Pecan Springs Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Pillow Elementary School. They make up for 58.24% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (17.55%), African Americans (11.97%), Asians (8.24%), Two or More Races (3.19%) and Native Americans (0.80%).
At Pecan Springs Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 57.66% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.47%), Whites or Caucasians (6.05%), Two or More Races (2.42%) and Native Americans (0.40%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Pillow Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 73.14% compared to 96.77% at Pecan Springs Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Pillow Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 48.40% of its student population compared to 37.90% at Pecan Springs Elementary School.
In addition, Pillow Elementary School has 49.47% bilingual students, 5.05% are in the gifted and talented program, while 10.64% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Pecan Springs Elementary School with 48.79% bilingual students, 6.45% gifted and talented students and 12.90% students in the special education program.
