Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Petrosky Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Hicks Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Petrosky Elementary School has a regular student population of 571 with a 11.7 students/teacher ratio while Hicks Elementary School has 712 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.7 students/teacher ratio.
Petrosky Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 78 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 82 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Hicks Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 72 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Petrosky Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Hicks Elementary School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Petrosky Elementary School. They make up for 41.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (35.55%), Asians (14.54%), Whites or Caucasians (6.13%), Native Americans (1.23%) and Two or More Races (0.18%).
The student population at Hicks Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 47.61%, followed by African Americans (32.30%), Asians (16.57%), Whites or Caucasians (2.95%) and Two or More Races (0.28%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Petrosky Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 81.61% compared to 85.39% at Hicks Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Petrosky Elementary School has 225 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 39.40% of student population. Hicks Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 419 or about 58.85% of student population.
Petrosky Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 47.64%, gifted and talented students, 2.45%, while 12.78% are in the special education program. Hicks Elementary School bilingual students comprise 58.85%, gifted and talented students, 1.97%, and 13.76% are in the special education program.

The 56 teachers at Hicks Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 9.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.6 years.
