Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Petrosky Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, with Bush Elementary School, which is a part of ALIEF ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Petrosky Elementary School has a regular student population of 571 with a 11.7 students/teacher ratio while Bush Elementary School has 834 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.6 students/teacher ratio.
Petrosky Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 78 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 82 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Petrosky Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Bush Elementary School’s four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Petrosky Elementary School. They make up for 41.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (35.55%), Asians (14.54%), Whites or Caucasians (6.13%), Native Americans (1.23%) and Two or More Races (0.18%).
At Bush Elementary School, Hispanics make up 86.33% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.83%), Asians (1.80%), Whites or Caucasians (1.44%) and Native Americans (0.48%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Petrosky Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 81.61% compared to 88.73% at Bush Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Petrosky Elementary School has 225 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 39.40% of student population. Bush Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 689 or about 82.61% of student population.
Petrosky Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 47.64%, gifted and talented students, 2.45%, while 12.78% are in the special education program. Bush Elementary School bilingual students comprise 85.13%, gifted and talented students, 0.72%, and 6.35% are in the special education program.
