Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Petersen Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Tinsley Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.

Petersen Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Tinsley Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Petersen Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 78.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.42%), Asians (1.58%), Whites or Caucasians (1.05%) and Two or More Races (0.26%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Tinsley Elementary School, Hispanics make up 89.72% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.46%), Whites or Caucasians (0.49%), Asians (0.16%) and Two or More Races (0.16%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Petersen Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 96.32% compared to 99.02% at Tinsley Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Petersen Elementary School has 184 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 48.42% of student population. Tinsley Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 523 or about 85.32% of student population.
In addition, Petersen Elementary School has 40.79% bilingual students, 6.84% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.47% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Tinsley Elementary School with 84.99% bilingual students, 7.34% gifted and talented students and 5.71% students in the special education program.
